Question : Problem: I'm having problems setting up a VPN on my home PC
|
|
Hello,
I'm trying to configure a VPN on my home computer (XP Pro) that I can access from my work computer. What I'm mostly interested in is having file sharing between the two computers, so I can pull files from my home computer to my work computer.
I've followed the instructions here on my home computer. http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm
I've configured my client computer with the connection to my home VPN, and I can connect fine. However I experience the following two problems.
1. I can't access a file share. e.g. \\server_ip\c$\ One thing I'm not sure is what IP I should use to access the server. When I make the connection, and look at the status of the connection, I see "Server IP" and "Client IP". I've been using the Server IP, which is the first ip on the range I configured on the VPN server. Putting \\server_ip\c$\ does not work, and yes the share does exist.
2. When the connection is enabled, it totally breaks my normal connection to the internet on the client PC.
Can someone help me troubleshoot these two problems? Thanks!

Solved this myself,
#1 on my question list: Enabled this registry key on client http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315236&Product=winxp
#2 I went to the properties of my VPN connection, under networking tab, under TCP/IP properties/ under "Advanced"
UNCHECK "Use default gateway on remote network"
