Question : Problem: Toshiba Satellite M40 Keyboard Errors

Hi,

Here's a doozy of a pickle. My friends Toshiba Satellite M40 has decided that it hates her. For some reason, the shift key causes the keyboard to go nuts. The error happens intermittently, but the results are always the same.

After triggering the error, all the keys get remapped. Shift starts to output something like "~[Nf-v]" (that might not be accurate, I don't have the lappy in front of me anymore), and other keys give similarily random gibberish. Also, am unable to restart or shutdown from windows (via mouse or otherwise), must do hard shutdown. There are no peripherals or anything else plugged in.

This happens all the time, even on fresh installs, and in safe mode too.

I have tried:
a)Complete restore from disk image
b)Reinstall Windows (from a retail cd, not the OEM jazz from above)
c)Reinstall touchpad driver ad nauseum
d)Sacrifice goat to Patron God of Toshiba Laptops

I'm thinking hardware issue, or BIOS issue somehow (there's an update available that I havn't tried, but seems unrelated). Unfortunatly, was unable to test with an external keyboard, but I am having my friend get on that ASAP, I'll post results.

Let me tell you, I am baffled. Has anyone ever seen similar behavior?

Thanks,

There maybe some particle stuck under the membrane keys or caps... it's better to change out the keyboard.
