Question : Problem: How does 4X DVD-R differ from 16X dvd-R ?..I have both and they looks the same !

What makes one blank dvd 4X and other 16X ?...I have Ritek DVD-R blank media that are rated at 4X and another at 16X burning speed. But I do not see any difference physically..They weight and look the same. I do know that my NEC burner recognize the media and burn them at the speed that is indicated on the dvds. I also know that they have different media code BUT WHAT I REALLY WANT TO KNOW IS, WHAT DETERMINES THE BURNING SPEED ?...The type of dye used on the media or the thickness of the dvd media itself?...If anyone knows the answer, pls reply. Thanks in advance.
