I have a (5 year old) APC Smart UPS 1000 with a dead battery. I am going to replace it on the weekend. In the meantime, is there a way to silence the 'beep' (telling me that I have a dead battery)?

According to the APC knowledgebase, the alarm cannot be silenced. It should, however, only occur for one minute every five hours. The only way to silence it is to replace the battery :-)
This is from the knowledgebase for the Smart UPS 1000:

3. UPS has failed the battery self-test - unit will beep continuously for 1 minute, every 5 hours, and the red "replace-battery" LED will be illuminated, until the condition is cleared.
Note: This alarm cannot de disabled.
