Question : Problem: Soundmax and recording sound!?

This is bizarre. I've tried a number of different products, starting with (eek) the windows Sound Recorder itself, but I realise it's the Mixer Device that seems to be causing the problem.

The thing is, if you look at the Volume Controls for "playback", there are a number of items there:

Master Volume
Wave
SW Synth
CD Player
Microphone
Line In

All well and good. But if you look at the Recording controls, suddenly all you get is
CD Player
Microphone
Line In
Stereo Mix

The sound from most sources on my PC appears to be routed through the "Wave" control in the playback controls. If I mute it, the sound is gone.

But it's not in the recording controls. And as a result there appears to be no way I can record from these sources.

This is bizarre. I've been able to do this before, with an older PC. What gives!? And most importantly, how do I fix this!?
