Question : Problem: A DVD-RW recorded on home DVD player not working on PC's
Mhy home DVD player records on DVD-RW. Now, when I record something and try to play the DVD on my computer (running Windows XP), the media (the disc) is not recongnized. On Explorer, you can see the type of files on the DVD as .GROW files. Is there a way to play a recorded DVD from my DVD player on my PC? I have several computers, including a new laptop with a CD-RW / DVD burner (RW/-RW) TIA

According to what you're saying, the CD-RW / DVD burner (RW/-RW) in your new laptop writes, and therefore also read all DVD-RW disks (you could check with Nero InfoTool if you're not sure, it tells you what formats your burner supports), and it does indeed read them since you can browse the files on the DVD. However, the .GROW format is not a common format for viewing DVDs (in fact, I've never heard of it, it's probably a proprietary format to your DVD recorder...), and therefore the software decoders on your laptop don't recognize it. So, in other words, your laptop sees the files on the disk, but can't play them because it doesn't know how to... I looked around for more info about the.GROw format and for software that can decode it, but to no avail... Your DVD recorder probably records in that format so you can only play the disks on it and no other DVD player, thus forcing you to buy the same brand... It's probably a marketing ploy...
The only thing I can suggest is for you to read your DVD recorder's manual and figure out if there's a way to change the recording format through the menus or something. If there is indeed a way to do so, make sure you select a common encoding format...
