Question : Problem: Share USB Printer via USB Hub

Hi,

Don't know if this is a dumb question or not but here goes.      I have a USB printer.    I want to share it between 2 PC's located within a couple of meters of the printer.     For various reasons I don't want to share it directly from one of the PC's.     If attach the both PC's and the printer to a USB hub will this work?    I don't want to try it in case it damages the equipment.

Answer : Problem: Share USB Printer via USB Hub

Hello lnwright,

No, that wont work.
The USB hub actually splits an USB port on a PC into various "subports" that use the same bandwidth, line and so on. For various technical reasons you cant connect two PCs to eachother using a standart non transfer USB cable, and then expect that they will be able to work with eachother. The same thing goes for a hub, as it would actually be connecting a PC to a (shared) USB port. Also, the second PC cant see the printer, as the data is only send to the PC that connected the USB port, as its the one sharing the port.

Kind regards,
~Irial
