Question : Problem: File Extension Definitions

My computer has Windows 95.  When I try to open some of my files, I get a dialog box asking me which application I want to use to open the file, and I see a list of apps (Adobe, Media Players, etc.)  Is there any basic list of file extension definitions that can guide me in selecting the appropriate app?  I have one file whose extension is .ged, and I have no idea what this means.  It is a file that I downloaded from a geneology source.  I would like to see a chart listing file extensions and what they all mean, and which app to use when opening them.  Thank you for your assistance.

Answer : Problem: File Extension Definitions

this URL is the best place (that I know of) for file extentions:
http://www.wotsit.org/index.htm
it doesn't however lists the .ged extention. You can find a lot more there.
