1st step is do not try to boot the drive until you decide on a course of action. If the drive is clicking or making a grinding noise the the Heads of the drive has probably crashed and would almost require you to send the drive to a clean room facility which runs between $1000 to $3000 depending on the drive and the amount of datayou want to recovery. You can however try to recovery the data on your own buy using data recovery software out on the market. I use Ontrack, spinrite, or Promedia. You would install this software on a good working drive that is larger than the drive you are trying to recover, after you install the software connect the bad drive as a slave in your system and run the recovery software. In most cases as long as the drive is recognized in the bios you have a good shot at getting the data back. You may only get one shot at the data so read the documentation that comes with the software. Another method that I have found to work is clone the bad drive to a new drive and then hook the newly imaged drive as a slave into a funtional OS and you can pull the data that way.
