Question : Problem: New WinXP Laptop Keeps Freezing

Hi!

I sold a new Acer Aspire 3630 (from my distributor) about 2 months ago to a friend of mine.
He says that it's been freezing since the first day and he hasn't used it much yet.

I'm trying to figure out what it could be, if it's a software issue or a hardware issue. It's still under warranty, but I haven't checked yet if the warranty also covers software issues. I've never before had any problems with Acer.

When I first started Windows, my friend asked me to turn off the Windows logoff sound, so I went into audio properties. Straight away rundll32.exe started hanging and I ended up having to power off the laptop.

I checked the events log and found following information:

2006/08/26 : Application Error: Application Hang (101) 1002
Hanging application rundll32.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

2006/07/24 : Application Error: Application Hang (101) 1002
Hanging application wmplayer.exe, version 9.0.0.3250, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

2006/07/24 : System Error: sr (none) 1
The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC000000D' while processing the file 'OBR3.ini' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume1'.  It has stopped monitoring the volume.

There are also a lot of the below errors and warnings:

2006/08/03 : System Error: Cdrom (none) 7
The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block.

2006/07/05 : System Warning: Cdrom (none) 51
An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation.

Would greatly appreciate some help with this. Please let me know if further information is required.

System details:
Windows XP Home 2002 SP2
1.6 GHz Intel Celeron M
1GB RAM - Physical Address Extension

Answer : Problem: New WinXP Laptop Keeps Freezing

I think the 'Norton' will be the key.
It seems as though we get a lot of problems up here that are created by the various Norton/Symantec applications interfering with the OS.
Good Luck,
Vic
