Question : Problem: Lexmark X63 + Win98 USB port connection
Hi. I'm nowhere near as computer literate as you all seem to be, so if you have any suggestions, please be kind! I'm working on a clean install of Win98 (no previous printer drivers, etc. to mess up the works). I ran the installation CD for the Lexmark X63 - a multi-function printer, scanner, fax, copier. I followed directions exactly (meaning I connected the USB cable only after being "told" to do so) and everything went swimmingly. Despite the apparently successful installation, I cannot print (Device not ready); nor can I access the Fax Utility Setup Program (Port is being used by another program). There are no device mgr. warning icons and the X63 is recognized: "PrintAMUSB" on the device list NOT under COM or LPT ports. The USB Host Controller shows no conflicts. The printer in My Computer is directed to "Print to USB001 (Virtual printer port for usb)." There are no port settings available. (Why is this a "virtual" port?) I have no other USB devices so I can't even check to see if the port can communicate with anything else. The cable is new. Legacy (usb) Support is enabled in my Intel 810E chipset BIOS. The version of Win98 I have includes the usbprint.sys and usbmon.dll files, if that makes any difference. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I am retracting the question insofar as I figured it out for myself. The answer is: make sure all Lexmark related files are checked to "run" in the msconfig (System Configuration Utility) Startup menu.
