Question : Problem: Full hard drive capacity not recognized
|

I have an 200gb external drive that is only showing up as 128 gigs. I would like to know what I need to do to get it to recognize the entire drive. Here are my system specs:
Computer Model OptiPlex GX240 BIOS Vendor Dell Computer Corporation BIOS Version A05 BIOS Date 07-19-02 Windows Version Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Server 2003, Enterprise Edition Manufacturer Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.80GHz Clock Speed 1.8GHz L2 Cache Size 512 Memory Slot 1 Description [DIMM_A]: 512Mb Memory Slot 2 Description [DIMM_B]: 512Mb Disk Drives ST380011A 74.52Gb QPS HD IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device 127.9Gb (should read 200Gb) IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers Intel(R) 82801BA Ultra ATA Controller Primary IDE Channel Secondary IDE Channel

yeah it does, but think of this, i used to have a 400 meg hard drive that gave me 350 megs of free space. my 10 gig har drive gives me about 8.3 gigs. my 45 gig gives me 41 gigs. i dont know the amount my 200 gives cause i dont have SP1 yet so i can only use 128 gigs, but the thing is when i read up on it i read that without 48-bit addressing you get only 137 gigs, but i can only use 128 gigs of free space. so it kind of does make sense that 200 gigs would let you use only 190 gigs.
Chew on this: "The downside to hard drive space is that no hard drive has the specified amount. I have two 200GB drives that are both only 190GB. This means that buying a 250GB hard drive might only result in 235GB." -http://www.bytesector.com/data/bs-article.asp?ID=285
