Question : Problem: Asus A7V8X with Athlon XP 1800+ crashing, need CPU Settings
Hi,
I've got an Asus A7V8X Motherboard. It's got an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ CPU in it.
AMD Athlon AXDA1800DUT3C JIUHB
It's got 3 sticks of 1GB PC3200 RAM
It's running Windows Small Business Server 2003.
The machine has been pretty stable for a couple of years now. But just recently it started freezing. Can't wake from screen saver, requiring hard boot, etc. It tried troubleshooting it and it got worse and worse. First it would stay up for an hour. Then 30 minutes. Then it wouldn't finish booting. Then it wouldn't boot at all.
I tried changing the CMOS battery.
I tried flashing the BIOS to the latest firmware (Av8x4m14.awd)
I tried reseating everything.
Nothing fixes the problem.
I'm thinking that it could be the CPU fan. It's making a rattling sound (although it's still spinning). So I'm planning to swap that. An overheating CPU would explain some of these problems.
But the immediate question is this. Several times when I rebooted, it went straight into the BIOS.
It came up with the error:
"During the last boot up your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting. Your system is now working in safe mode. To optimize system performance & reliability, make sure the CPU Speed conforms to the specifications of your CPU."
The default settings it shows are:
CPU Speed: 1150MHz
Memory Frequency: Auto
CPU Vcore Setting: Auto
CPU Vcore: 1.650 V
CPU Frequency Multiple: 11.5x
CPU External Frequency: 100/33
Does anyone know what the optimal CPU settings are for my CPU (for this RAM and this Mobo)?
I'm not planning on overclocking or doing anything fancy. I just want the most stable CPU settings.
Thanks.

Here's the specs for the cpu

Try adjusting the settings and hopefully it works but, it's very possible the cpu has been damaged from overheating.
