Question : Problem: Installing All in one printer with no local admin
|
|
Hi, we have a network with all users not having local admin. PC's and laptops are XP Pro SP2. All users are normal user (not power users).
The mobile workers need to have a local printer installed. Which they can't do themselfs because of no local admin. What we do is install them ourselfs with the printer at hand so we can attach it when the installation software request it. And it works fine.
The problem is when we try to install this remotely (occurs when e.g. a mobile worker gets a new printer) with a runas (administrator) command, especially the All in ones (in our case HP Laserjet 3050 or 1522 with scanner software integrated in the installation software = a 4 step installation proces).
The runas (administrator) starts the installation software perfectly but somewhere in the installation proces it hangs. I guess the runas works fine at the beginning but somewhere down the line their is probably an other proces started which is not started with runas and theirfor it refuses to install because lack of admin rights. (i'm just guessing here) Is their a way to install it remotely anyway ?
I also tried installing it myself at the office (as admin) with an other similar (exactly the same model!)printer at hand but when the user gets home and attaches his local printer, the laptop somehow sees it's another printer and tries installing the software. It also refuses to use the installed printer. Any solutions for that?
If at least one of the above 2 questions could be solved, that would help a lot!

Do you also get this if you temporarily change the PC management settings to allow the user's account local admin rights and then run remotely?
What are you using to connect remotely to the users' PCs?
